German Chancellor Angela Merkel has Germany well on its way to energy independence.

If anyone can save the world from global warming, it might just be Angela Merkel. Chancellor for Germany, Merkel was one of the key leaders present at the signing of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. Since then, she’s been working hard to push Germany towards energy independence, with lofty goals like cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050.

Under Merkel’s leadership, hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the energy sector have been created. She is living proof that investing in sustainability is not only good for the economy, but that not investing in sustainability will ultimately cut economic prosperity.
