The Wilderness Society

Wilderness Society

Since 1935, The Wilderness Society has been a powerhouse in conservation. This organization wants to protect and resore the lands and wildlife that belong to all of us because they recognize how much our wilderness has given us. Since its inception, the Wilderness Society has been an influential presence in every major public land issue, and it has won conservation victories against major corporations.

The Wilderness Society believes that if Americans can reconnect with the wilderness around us, we will all be motivated to protect it. If we can understand what these fragile ecosystems provide for us – environmentally, economically, and recreationally – we will feel compelled to save it.

Their mission statement is to “protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places.  We contribute to better protection, stewardship and restoration of our public lands, preserving our rich natural legacy for current and future generations.”

To date, the Wilderness Society has helped permanently conserve 110 million acres of land in 44 states. The organization is currently focused on what they call the Magnificent Seven, seven special places across the country that are currently threatened  by human influences, such as oil drilling, logging, over-fishing, or anti-wilderness legislation.
